Auto-Role Plugin — Ori Discord Bot

Ori’s auto-role plugin assigns a role to every new member the moment they join your Discord server. Select the role in the dashboard, flip the toggle, and every new member gets it automatically. No slash commands, no configuration inside Discord, no member interaction required. Works instantly on join. Free for all servers.

This is Ori’s simplest plugin. Pick a role, enable it, done. Use it to give every new member a default “Member” or “Viewer” role so they immediately have access to your content channels.

  1. Open the Ori dashboard at oribot.org
  2. Select your server
  3. Click Plugins in the sidebar
  4. Find Auto-Role and click the toggle to enable it
  5. Click into Auto-Role to open its settings
  6. Select the role you want new members to receive from the dropdown
  7. Done. Every new member will now get that role instantly.
  • Role (required) — The Discord role to assign to every new member. Select from the dropdown, which shows all roles in your server that Ori can assign.

That’s it. One setting.

  • One auto-assigned role per server
  • Ori’s role must be positioned above the target role in your server’s role hierarchy
  • Ori needs the Manage Roles permission
  • Auto-role does not apply retroactively to existing members — only new joins

Ori’s auto-role plugin cannot assign multiple roles. One role per server. If you need members to have multiple roles on join, use auto-role for the primary one and consider reaction roles for additional self-service roles.

Ori’s auto-role plugin cannot conditionally assign roles. All new members get the same role regardless of how they joined, what invite they used, or any other criteria.

Ori’s auto-role plugin cannot delay role assignment. The role is assigned the moment the member joins. There is no waiting period or verification gate.

Ori’s auto-role plugin cannot assign roles to existing members retroactively. Only members who join after auto-role is enabled receive the role. Existing members are not affected.

Ori’s auto-role plugin cannot assign roles higher than Ori’s own role. Discord requires a bot’s role to be above any role it assigns. If the target role is higher than Ori in the hierarchy, assignment will fail silently.

New members aren’t getting the role

Check that:

  1. The auto-role plugin is enabled in the dashboard
  2. A role is selected in the dropdown
  3. Ori has the Manage Roles permission
  4. Ori’s role is above the target role in your server’s role hierarchy (Server Settings → Roles → drag Ori higher)

I want to assign the role to existing members

Auto-role only applies to new joins. To assign a role to existing members, use Discord’s native role management (right-click a member → Roles) or Discord’s built-in onboarding features.

The role I want isn’t showing in the dropdown

The dropdown only shows roles that Ori can assign — meaning roles positioned below Ori’s role in the hierarchy. Move Ori’s role higher in Server Settings → Roles to see more options.

Is Ori’s auto-role plugin free? Yes. Completely free for all servers.

Does auto-role conflict with verification bots? No. Ori assigns the role immediately on join. If you use a verification system, the auto-role still applies — you can use channel permissions to control what the role can access before verification.

Can I change the auto-assigned role? Yes. Change the selection in the dashboard at any time. New members will get the newly selected role. Members who already received the previous role are not affected.

Can I see who was auto-assigned a role? The dashboard shows an activity log of recent auto-role assignments with timestamps.

What happens if I disable auto-role? New members stop receiving the role immediately. Members who already have the role keep it — Ori does not remove previously assigned roles.
